When I was younger, I was very affirmative about my wish to die before the decay. I thought about it again after my father's death after very bad years with dementia and many other health issues. I adhered then to Exit, which helps with suicide in desperate cases. I also thought about it during my mother's last years with implacably progressing dementia, which was so heartbreaking (this time I was the main care-taker within the family), only two years ago. Now I am 61, time flies, and I don't know...

Hello Magdalena....I'm 75 and have learned from my adventures with cancer that we never know for sure what we'll do until we're in the situation and really, even then, not until we do it. I very much support assisted dying and the right to die. We do have legal assisted dying in the state where I live, but only if you have a life expectancy of no more than 6 months, which leaves out a great many situations. I hope the law can be expanded. The greatest opposition to it comes from conservative religious people and (very sadly) from the disability rights movement (of which I was once a part), so as a spiritual person with a disability, I've written several articles in support of right to die. But political conservatives often seem to oppose it as well. People fear it will be misused. But I applaud the law in Canada and wish we had that in the US. As I wrote about in my last book (Death: The End of Self-Improvement), my former lover who died of cancer had gotten the medicine to end her life but never took it...and this is apparently quite common...she kept saying how interesting it was the way everything was falling apart. Many people in my family have made it into their 90s and even 100s, and for most, the final years were not fun, although my mother did better than any of the others. Old age is definitely an adventure in letting go on so many levels, and usually in facing more and more physical pain. Anyway, I recommend the book. It's a wonderful exploration of all of this. Always good to hear from you. ❤️

This title intrigues me. I was in that spot for quite a while. So far it's Stay until something stops me. As you say, we dont know until the experience comes.

A book that has stuck around in ny mind for a long time is The Leisure Seeker by Malcom Zandorian. A book about an elderly couple's last grand road trip to escape the inevitable.

I so appreciate your writings. Thank you.
